Unlike many of his Neapolitan contemporaries whose musical fame was largely based on operatic compositions, Francesco Durante (1684-1755) achieved international recognition by concentrating almost exclusively on the composition of sacred vocal music. The Missa in D (Missa Pastorale) is a work of a mature master who still possessed a high degree of creativity at an advanced age and had no need to borrow from his earlier compositions.
