Video Game Music Composition Project

Elizabeth Caldwell - Organized Chaos

This video game music unit is a great way to engage upper-elementary and middle school students and get them composing, listening, analyzing, and thinking about music! Students will learn about video game soundtrack composers by watching videos of interviews, analyze music from video games, discuss various aspects of music and sound in video games, and then create their own video game and the music to go with it!

Included in this unit:

  • PowerPoint slides which can be projected on a screen, used on a smart board, or printed out - slides include links to interviews with famous video game soundtrack composers
  • On-task reminders for students with each step of the project to remind them of what they should be doing, discussion questions, and prompts
  • Directions for the project, plus a blank slide to add your own in PPT and PDF
  • PDF teacher notes, with suggestions and tips for teaching the project in a whole-class, small-group, or individualized format
  • Fully editable Word document worksheets for students to use in creating their video game and the music to accompany it (also in PDF version)
  • Fully editable Word document letter home with links to free online software for students to code real video games (also in PDF version)
  • Fully editable Word document rubric to use for projects (also in PDF version)
