"Lent et douloureux" - slow and mournful - was the title Satie gave his original piano piece. The delicate dissonances he incorporated in the supporting harmonies were incongruous with the late Romantic compositional styles of the time, yet the underlying structures laid the foundation for what would later become "ambient" music noted for it's minimalist, empyreal totalities.
